1998 Gravner, Breg, Friuli, Italy: 91

Date: Fri Dec 02, 2005 12:00 am  Author: Wilfried

1998 Gravner, Breg, Friuli, Italy: Slightly dusty red gold with a hint of rosé, high viscosity. Nose like a classic "Spätlese", may be even "Trockenbeerenauslese" - is this a sweet wine? Medium full body, full taste but very dry, good acidity and a good deal of tannins. Long finish, nice aftertaste. Not as good as the vintages before 1995 but a nice and quite interesting wine to drink like a red wine. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 91. Tasted2005Dec. Score91. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one

2003 Quinta do Crasto, Vinha da Ponte, Douro, Portugal: 93

Date: Fri Dec 02, 2005 9:05 pm  Author: Wilfried

2003 Quinta do Crasto, Vinha da Ponte, Douro, Portugal: Brilliant medium purple, dense tears, tints slightly the glass. Dark berries in the nose, velvety, ascending alcohol - nice nose even with a cold to recognize. Medium full to full body, intense dark berries, bit primary, good acidity, slightly oaky tannins, good balance. Long finish, fruity acidity, velvety tannins. Despite the high alcohol content of 14,5% fat or hot. Nice to drink young if you like a full load of sensory sensations, but some ageing could be also of interest. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Tasted2005Dec. Score93. Not blind. Not decanted. Riedel Vinum Burgundyglass

1995 Pegau, Reservée, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhone, France: 91

Date: Wed Dec 07, 2005 2:53 pm  Author: Wilfried

1995 Pegau, Reservée, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhone, France: Bright dark garnet/light ruby, perfect tears, only a bit of fine sediment. Slightly austere nose, medical/mineral note, could be a Barolo, no CdP nose. Medium full body, only a hint of very concentrated clean dark fruit, good acidity and slightly green tannins, again a bit medical and austere with a reference to Barolo and after some time also to Bordeaux 1994 (for example a Lalande with a hint of green bell pepper). Long finish, chemical palate coating feeling in the aftertaste - just like a very low TCA taint but only in the aftertaste and not in the nose or taste. This wine may be not defect but at least a bit odd for a CdP. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 91. Tasted2005Dec. Score91. Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting.

Date: Fri Dec 09, 2005 8:08 pm  Author: Wilfried

2003 Fritsch, Pinot Noir, Wagram - Donauland, Austria: Very light ruby, brilliant, fat tears, light rim. Decent toast, vanilla, dark chocolate in the nose - no typical Pinot Noir nose. Medium to slim body, some toast again, bit of red fruit, slightly coarse acidity, slightly bitter velvety tannins. Medium long finish, persistent tannins, hint of hot. Had this wine some months ago from cask and found it much better then. Has screw cap instead cork - don't like to have such things in my cellar. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90. Tasted2005Dec. Score90. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass

1990 Prunotto, Montestefano, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy: Corked

Date: Wed Dec 14, 2005 2:29 pm  Author: Wilfried

1990 Prunotto, Montestefano, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy: Slightly muted mineral nose, ditto taste. Simply not good, defect bottle - most probably a low TCA taint. In a restaurant I would be very unhappy with such a wine - not good but not bad enough to send it back as corked.
Tasted2005Dec. NoScore.

1991 Trapet (Jean and Jean-Louis), Chambertin Grand Cru, Gevrey-Chambertin, Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France: Light brilliant garnet, fat tears. Nose first Appenzeller cheese rind, then strong phenolic notes, smoky, velvety tannins. Medium body, very intense but fine acidity, red fruit, massive tannins. Long finish, acidic masked persistent velvety tannins. Not to drink stand alone due to the high acidity, but a perfect match with red coated cheese like "Ami du Chambertin" (no Epoisses this time). Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 92. Tasted2005Dec. Score92. Coburg20051216. Not blind. Not decanted.
