1989 Corino, Vigna Giachini, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Brilliant light ruby, dense tears, floating deposit. Soft velvety nose, honey comb, red fruit, earth, multilayered. Medium body, very fine red fruit, some minerals, earthy note, excellent balance, soft tannins, finesse. Long finish, silky velvety tannins. Quite nice now. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94. Tasted2005Mar. Score94. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Riedel Vinum Burgundy glass. 1990 Brumont, Montus Prestige, Madiran, France: 92

1990 Brumont, Montus Prestige, Madiran, France: Dark purple, clear, dense tears, heavy sediment. Nose with a hint of cess pool, dark fruit, some roots. Chubby body, some barnyard taste, sappy dark fruit, good tannins, good acidity, good balance, bit rustic. Long finish, soft velvety tannins, well integrated acidity. Good match with spicy food, good to drink stand alone or with some dark chocolate. Reminds me a bit of La Veguete 2002Tasted2005Mar. Score92. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. 2002 Winkler-Hermaden, Olivin (Zweigelt), Süd-Oststeiermark, Austria: Light purple, bright, fat tears. Slight barnyard and some red fruit in the nose. Medium body, may be a bit thin in the middle, fresh note despite 14% alc vol, good acidity, fine tannins, good balanced, mineral note (after vulcanic soil you can imagine). Nice finish, persistent tannins. Would have never recognized Zweigelt here, best Zweigelt I had so far. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91. 1990 Moccagatta, Bric Balin, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy: Medium garnet, quite brilliant, fat tears, heavy sediment. Very complex nose, tar, resin, lovage, some dark fruit, ascending alcohol. Medium body, soft acidity, very strong but same time soft tannins, very soft dark fruit, bit mineral and earthy. Very long finish, soft persistent tannins. This time nice to drink even without food. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 15 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95. Tasted2005Mar. Score95. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Riedel Vinum Burgundy glass. 1990 Beaucastel, Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge, Rhone, France: Light to medium ruby, bright, very dense tears, heavy sediment. Slight barnyard in the beginning, then soft and pure dark fruit, earthy note, mineral, multilayered. Medium to chubby body, taste accordingly to bouquet, soft fruity acidity, soft silky tannins, very well balanced. Long and very satisfying finish. So far the greatest bottle of Beaucastel 90 I ever had. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 9 for overall = total score of 95. Tasted2005Mar. Score95. Not blind. 2000 Potel, Vosne-Romanée, Cote de Nuits, Burgundy, France: Light ruby, bright, fine tears. Decent red berries in the nose, not very expressive but pure. Medium to slender body, decent red berries fruit, some acidity, low tannins. Nice wine for a simple generic Vosne-Romanée. Comparable to a Gantenbein Pinot Noir with a bit less body. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 88. Tasted2005Mar. Score88. Not blind. From memory. Decanted shortly before drinking. 1990 Armand, Clos des Epeneaux, Pommard 1er Cru, Burgundy, France: Medium ruby, light rim, slightly dusty, nice tears, low sediment. Nice dark nose, rather young fruit, cool, ascending alcohol. Medium body, some fleshy fruit, good acidity, strong tannins, slightly coarse, good balance. Long finish with mouth impregnating tannins. Very good match with Spaghetti Bolognese. So far the best bottle of this wine I ever had. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. Tasted2005Mar. Score92. Not blind. 1990 Aldo Conterno, Bussia Soprana, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Dark garnet, fat tears, low sediment. Soft velvety fruit in the nose, pure expression. Medium body mouthfeel despite the hight alcohol content, decent red and dark fruit, very soft acidity, silky tannins, well balanced. Long finish, persistent silky velvety tannins. Excellent match with Osso Bucco. Relief after a slightly corked first bottle. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Tasted2005Mar. Score93. 2003 Günter Triebaumer, Blaufränkisch, Burgenland, Austria: Light purple, fat tears, no sediment. Velvety young dark fruit in the nose, bit alcoholic. Chubby body, dark fruit, young Blaufränkisch, touch of elderberry, acidity well hidden, in the middle a bit thin, good tannins, some oak, not yet very integrated. Nice finish, good tannins, bit hot. Good wine for this hot vintage, cheap plastic stopper is a bit annoying. Less than 10 Euro - good QPR. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 89. 1990 Brumont, Montus Prestige, Madiran, France: Medium purple, bright, dense tears, sediment baked on the side of the bottle. Earthy nose, some wet cool moss, dark fruit. Medium body, surprisingly soft but quite intense in taste, dense dark fruit, massive tannins, soft acidity, well balanced. Long finish, soft tannins and acidity. Good with your simple or hefty meal but also fine stand alone drinking. I like this wine very much. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94. Tasted2005Mar. Score94. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Villeroy & Boche cut lead glass (clearly no ideal glass for wine tasting, but simple nice optic and somehow according to the wine). Bottle count reduced by one

1989 Corino, Vigna Giachini, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Medium garnet with brick note, bright, dense tears, quite some sediment in the bottle and a bit of it floating in the glass. Mature nose, earthy, hint of tar, minerals. Medium body, some mature fruit, nice acidity, very well balanced, fine silky tannins. Long finish with warm feeling, soft tannins. Is better to drink when rather cool, gets a bit flat when too warm. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Tasted2005Mar. Score93. Not blind. Medium body, solid acidity, mature dark fruit, nice tannins, well balanced, some power. Long finish, soft tannins, nice acidity. Very good with spicy food and also with chocolate, solo a bit austere. 1990 Scavino, Bric del Fiasc, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Medium garnet, very brilliant, fat tears, some fine floating and good deal of tartaric sediment. Spiky ascending cool alcoholic nose, slightly mineral note, quite mature. Medium body, good dose of acidity, decent dark fruit, prominent tannins. Long finish, persistent tannins, quite austere. Not to drink stand alone, very good with some braised meat with vegetables, curious excellent match with blueberries, OK with chocolate. 2003 Fondrèche, Nadal, Cotes du Ventoux, France: Light violet purple, bright, dense tears, some tartaric sediment in the bottle. Nose after very fresh open walnuts, slightly green, velvety dark fruit, some new oak. Medium to full body (big deal with 14,5% vol alc), good deal of new oak, some dark fruit, good acidity and quite some tannins, bitter chocolate, even a bit austere, quite a mouthful of wine. Long finish, very persistent tannins. Nice to drink stand alone, fine with dark chocolate. May be hard to pair with food. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 90. Tasted2005Mar. Score90. Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting.
