1995 Angelini, Spuntali, Brunello, Tuscany, Italy: Medium to dark garnet, brilliant, nice tears, no sediment. Hint of bitter oak in the nose. Medium body, fine red fruit, very good acidity, velvety tannins, well integrated. Medium long finish, velvety persistent tannins and some fruit in the aftertaste. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 91. Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting. Riedel Vinum Chardonnay glass. Bottle count reduced by one

1994 Allemand, Chaillot, Cornas, Rhone, France: Rather light ruby, bright, nice tears, heavy tartaric sediment. Clean if a bit austere nose, hazelnut, green walnuts, dried herbs. Medium body, vivid black and red fruit, soft but good acidity, bit smoky tannins, good balance. Long finish, nice smoky tannins. Begins to get mature, nice wine but some fullness in the mouthfeeling is missing. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91. Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one

1990 Aldo Conterno, Bussia Soprana, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Light ruby, brick rim, fat tears, good deal of sediment. Austere nose, bit earthy and medical. Medium body, low fruit, good acidity, silky persistent tannins, well balanced. Long finish, persistent tannins. Quite a relief after some more fruity wines. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one


2001 Quinta de la Rosa, Reserva, Douro Tinto, Portugal: 96

2001 Quinta de la Rosa, Reserva, Douro Tinto, Portugal: Dense purple, brilliant, dense tears, tints the glass, no sediment. Very dark fruit, clean, minimal animal hint, velvety, decent hint of compost, honey, honey comb, quite a nose. Rather full body, cool dark fruit, very well integrated acidity, intense but soft tannins, excellent balance. Very long finish, persistent velvety tannins with lush dark fruit in the aftertaste. Not only a great bottle of wine but also very versatile with food. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 15 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 96. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking.

2000 Ktima Kir-Yianni, Rammista, Xinomavro, Imathia, Greece: Medium ruby, dense tears, brilliant, no sediment.
Slightly sweet mineral nose, could be a Barolo or Barbaresco 1997. Medium body, decent red fruit, good acidity, persistent velvety tannins, good balance. Long finish, persistent tannins. Good match with grilled lamb chops and candied orange slices dipped in chocolate. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one

Medium finish, persistent dry tannins. This is getting mature now. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90. Not blind. Not decanted. 1989 Angelus, St. Emilion, Bordeaux, France: Medium purple, fat tears, tints the glass. First whiff of yeast but then decent velvety clean nose, complex. Medium full body, soft and bit cool, well integrated acidity, persistent. Very long finish, bit of pepper in the aftertaste. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94.

Cool slight barnyard with hint of citrus fruits. Medium light body, intense liquorice, rather ripe. Pepper in the finish, dry tannins. Medium to slim body, nice red fruit, some toast again, soft velvety tannins, well integrated. Long finish, persistent tannins. Quite interesting wine. First whiff a hint of volatile acidity but this was gone fast, then velvety dark fruit, cool. Medium to medium full body, intense dark soft fruit, some good acidity, velvety tannins. Medium to medium full body, mature dark fruit, very good acidity, strong and bit dry tannins, in total good balance. Long finish, persistent bit dry tannins. Mature but still a powerful wine. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking.

1990 Moccagatta, Bric Balin, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy: Medium garnet, brilliant, fat tears, heavy floating and baked sediment. Complex mature bit resinous nose, tar, herbs, bit of dark fruit. Medium body, soft but bright acidity, very intense fine velvety tannins, hint of mineral and dark earth. Very long finish, soft persistent tannins. After a lot of bottle variation finally a very fine bottle again. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking.

1990 Beaucastel, Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge, Rhone, France: Medium ruby, bright, very dense tears. Bit of barnyard, silky fruit, complex, very fine nose. Medium body, exquisite melting acidity, soft silky tannins, excellent balance. Long and very persistent finish. Would be a good choice for a ringer in a 1990 Burgundytasting. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 9 for overall = total score of 95. Not blind. Not decanted.
