16.  Dezember 2006: Rhone Nord 2003 in Graz im Restaurant „Im Fünften“

Die richtige Stimmung ist da noch nicht aufgekommen – wird schon noch.

Die dekantierten Weine für die beiden ersten Flights.

 

Die Verkostung erfolgte blind in Viererflights mit Aufdeckung nach jeden Flight. Wie schon oben zu sehen war, wurden die Weine kurz vor dem Einschenken dekantiert. Die Gläser waren markenlose Stielgläser in der Art Riedel Vinum Chardonnay.

 

2003 Vernay Georges, Blonde de Seigneur, Cote-Rotie, Rhone, France: 90


Optic: Brilliant medium purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: Clean dark fruit, bit phenolic.
Taste: Medium body, rather unbalanced, bit spiky acidity, slightly hot, intense bit bitter tannins. Very long finish, wormwood in the aftertaste.
Overall: In total not uninteresting, may be a tad too bitter.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 90.


 

2003 Faury Philippe, Cote-Rotie, Rhone, France: 90


Optic: Brilliant medium purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: Unobtrusive, dark red fruit, reluctant.
Taste: Medium body, bit vulgar red fruit, not very balanced, type young Blaufränkisch, coarse tannins. Long finish, slightly bitter tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Nose quite reserved, else potentially of interest.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90.

Bouquet: Unobtrusive, dark fruit, reluctant.
Taste: Medium body, elegant, well balanced, fine red fruit, delicate acidity, silky tannins. Very long finish, delicate silky persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Beautiful wine.

2003 Jasmin Patrick, Cote-Rotie, Rhone, France: 89


Optic: Brilliant dark ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Unobtrusive dark fruit, hint of lard.
Taste: Medium body, intense coarse bitter tannins, masked fruit, bit hot. Long finish, coarse bitter tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Falls short of being outstanding.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 89.


 

2003 Chapoutier, Les Varonnieres, Crozes-Hermitage, Rhone, France: 91


Optic: Dark purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: Phenolic touch, bit sweet dark fruit.
Taste: Plump body, intense dark red fruit, vivid acidity, bit rustic, solid tannins. Long finish, dark fruity coarse velvety tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Bit hot, else of interest.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.

Optic: Dark purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: Smoky touch, phenolic, masked fruit.
Taste: Medium body, bit coarse tannins, sweet palate impregnating, tad hot, slightly rustic, acidic dark fruit. Very long finish, massive persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Tad too rustic.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 88.


 

2003 Chave, Offerus, St. Joseph, Rhone, France: 89


Optic: Medium purple, brilliant, fat tears.
Bouquet: Silky whiff of brett, dark fruit, manure.
Taste: Slim body, red fruit, slightly bitter tannins, metallic note. Long finish, acidic persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Just short of elegant.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 89.

Optic: Medium purple, brilliant, fat tears.
Bouquet: Phenolic touch, bit smoky, tad brett.
Taste: Medium body, bitter as ink, very intense dark red fruit, intense palate impregnating tannins. Very long finish, bitter velvety persistent tannins in the Aftertaste.
Overall: Powerful wine with impact, not elegant.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92.


 

2003 Hensel, Ikarus, Pfalz, Germany: 93


Optic: Black purple, tints the glass, fat tears.
Bouquet: Slightly bretty touch, dark red fruit.
Taste: Plump body, dark red bitter tannins, a tiny bit dusty. Very long finish, black ink in the aftertaste.
Overall: Wine with impact, warm feeling. Wine of interest.
Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93.

Northern Rhone Vintage 2003 Tasting Graz 20061216 - Pirate. Crossing Blaufränkisch x Cabernet Sauvignon = Cabernet Cubin. Single blind. Decanted shortly before tasting. Generic white wine stemware. Bottle count reduced by one.


 

2003 Gerin Jean-Michel, La Ladonne, Cote-Rotie, Rhone, France: 89


Optic: Dark ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Vanilla, toast, roasted aromas, sweetish.
Taste: Plump body, bit hot, sweet-sour dark red fruit, spiky mouth impregnating tannins. Long finish, spiky sweet-sour persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Bit unbalanced.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 89.

Optic: Medium purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: Bit pungent, horse radish, phenolic hint of brett.
Taste: Medium body, rustic acidity, strawberry effervescent powder type red fruit, coarse tannins. Long finish, effervescent palate impregnating tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Strawberry effervescent powder wine.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 11 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 87.


 

2003 Rostaing, La Ladonne, Cotie-Rotie, Rhone, France: 88


Optic: Brilliant ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Raw well hung meat, slightly repelling.
Taste: Medium body, acid red fruit, bit coarse tannins. Long finish, coarse persistent tannins.
Overall: Atypical smell and taste. Faulty bottle?

2003 Chapoutier, Ermitage Les Greffieux, Hermitage Rouge, Rhone, France: 89


Optic: Dark ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Delicate roasted aromas, slightly hot, same time cool.
Taste: Medium body, strong acidity, slightly cooked fruit, dense tannins, unbalanced. Very long finish, massive acid persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Powerful but unbalanced.

2003 Chave, Hermitage Rouge, Rhone, France: 90


Optic: Medium purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: FAt, nutty, bit smoky, rancid.
Taste: Medium body, sweet-sour dark red fruit, coarse velvety tannins. Long finish, persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: No grip, acid aftertaste.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 90.


 

2003 Jaboulet, La Chapelle, Hermitage Rouge, Rhone, France: 92


Optic: Light purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: Bit smoky and roasted aromas, delicate dark red fruit.
Taste: Medium body, good balance, delicate acidity, dark red fruit, silky tannins. Long finish, silky fruity persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Certainly a nice bottle, not much weight but rather elegant.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92.


 

2003 Remizieres, Cuvée Emilie, Hermitage Rouge, Rhone, France: 94


Optic: Black purple, tints the glass, fat tears.
Bouquet: Lactic touch, dark fruit, smoky, volatile phenols, fresh distilled grape brandy.
Taste: Rather full body, very good balance, massive dark fruit, silky persistent tannins, elegant. Very long finish, delicate palate impregnating tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Powerful wine, same time quite elegant - this wine has it all.
Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94.


 

2003 Guigal, Chateau d'Ampuis, Cote-Rotie, Rhone, France: 90


Optic: Brilliant ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Dark red primary fruit, bit pungent.
Taste: Medium body, acid dark red fruit, roasted aromas, cool, slightly coarse tannins. Very long finish, sweetish palate impregnating tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Interesting wine, but not perfect.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90.


 

2003 Gerin Jean-Michel, Les Grandes Places, Cote-Rotie, Rhone, France: 89


Optic: Dark ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Dark cool phenolic, dark red acid fruit, ascending alcohol.
Taste: Medium Body, primary red fruit, bit acidic, rather coarse tannins. Long finish, acid fruity tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Acidic yet a tad fat.

Optic: Light purple, fat tears.
Bouquet: Primary acidic cassis, bit pungent.
Taste: Medium body, acidic red fruit, slightly bitter acidic tannins, some backbone. Very long finish, persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Wine of interest, nose should get better over time.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 91.


 

2003 Rostaing, Cote Blonde, Cotie-Rotie, Rhone, France: 88


Optic: Medium ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Chocolate, toast, silky.
Taste: Medium Body, acidic red fruit, bit coarse tannins, bit rancid. Long finish, bit rancid tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Think, I will quit buying Rostaing wines.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 88.

Optic: Dark garnet, bright, fat tears.
Bouquet: Very fragile nose, phenolic hint.
Taste: Medium body, decent acidity, slightly palate impregnating, masked fruit. Long finish, sweetish masked fruit in the aftertaste.
Overall: Bad bottle. Score therefore questionable.

Very ripe nose with a nasty corked note behind. Taste slightly moldy. May be no serious cork but clearly a bottle far from flawless. Rats.

Optic: Medium ruby, fat tears, fine floating sediment.
Bouquet: Bit pungent dark fruity sweet red nose.
Taste: Plump body, slightly sweetish red fruit, sweetish impregnating tannins. Very long finish, sweet sour bitter candied tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: May be not a bad wine but definitely not to my taste.

Overall: Nice mature bottle.

In dieser Phase muss die verbale Ausdrucksfähigkeit bereits durch deutliche Gestik unterstützt werden.

 

 

Am nächsten Tag beim Frühstück – erhöhte Unschärfe.

 

Da hat schon wieder wer was Unpassendes gesagt ...

 

Etwas abgekämpft. Fahrtüchtig?

 

Der Zusammenhang von erhöhtem Alkoholkonsum am Vorabend mit Aussehen und Inhalt des Frühstücks am nächsten Morgen sollte endlich einmal wissenschaftlich untersucht werden ...

 

 

 

Eine hoch interessante Verkostung und insgesamt eine nette Abwechslung für den Weihnachtsabend des Instituts.

Die Weine Rhone Nord 2003 haben so wie die anderer Regionen nicht ganz dem vorauseilenden Ruf total grandioser Weine entsprochen. Wirklich interessant waren eigentlich nur Remizieres Emilie und Jaboulet La Chapelle. Und der deutsche Ikarus hat sich grandios geschlagen.
