2001 Gravner, Ribolla Anfora, Venezia Giulia IGT, Friuli, Italy: 92

Optic: Red gold, clear.
Bouquet: Dried flowers, dried grass, hint of lemon.
Taste: Medium body, low fruit, bit austere, nice acidity, persistent silky tannins, good balance. Medium long finish, persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Wine of high interest.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92.

1999 Triebaumer, Mariental, Blaufränkisch, Burgenland, Austria: 91

Optic: Black ruby, fat tears, black baked tartaric sediment.
Bouquet: Dark fruit, clean, some oak.
Taste: Medium body, very crisp acidity, clean dark fruit, velvety tannins. Long finish, dark fruity acid velvety tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Tad too acid - needs may be 10 more years of cellaring.
Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.

1994 Leoville Las Cases, St. Julien, Bordeaux, France: 90

Optic: Brilliant ruby, fine tears, some tartaric sediment.
Bouquet: Mature dark fruit, whiff of barnyard.
Taste: Medium body, soft dark fruit, nice integrated acidity, velvety tannins, good balance, touch of brett. Long finish, persistent soft tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Quite mature now.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90.

1994 Torraccia, Oriu, Porto Vecchio Reserve, Corse, France: 87

Optic: Light garnet, light rim, medium tears, some floating sediment.
Bouquet: Mature dark red fruit, clean.
Taste: Slim body, dark red fruit, good acidity very well integrated, low tannins. RAther short finish, soft fruity acidity in the aftertaste.
Overall: Goes well with your lunch or dinner, low profile.
Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 87.

1989 Corino, Vigna Giachini, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: 93

Optic: Medium garnet, bright, nice tears, some sediment.
Bouquet: Bit earthy, tar, minerals.
Taste: Medium body, low red fruit, crisp acidity, delicate smoky tannins, well balanced. Long finish with crisp acidity and persistent tannins in the aftertaste, warm feeling.
Overall: Textbook mature Barolo.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93.

1990 Bosquet des Papes, Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge, Rhone, France: 91

Optic: Dark garnet, very dense tears, fine floating sediment.
Bouquet: Mellow mature dark red fruit, some spices, only hint of brett.
Taste: Medium full body, mellow mature sappy dark red fruit, soft acidity, silky tannins, good balanced. Long aftertaste, persistent tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Had to revisit this wine again - mature but still strong going.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.

2004 d'Auphilhac, Carignan, Vin de Pays du Mont Baudile, Montpeyroux, Languedoc, France: 90

Optic: Dark ruby, bright, nice tears.
Bouquet: Clean, velvety, delicate dark red fruit.
Taste: Medium body, good balance, nice low fruit, well integrated acidity, soft tannins. Long finish, nice soft fruity tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Not complex, simple a pleasure to share a bottle with friends.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90.

2003 d'Auphilhac, Plos des Baumes, Vin de Pays, Montpeyroux, Languedoc, France: 87

Optic: Very dark ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Clean dark oaky fruit.
Taste: Medium full body, very primary dense fruit, rustic acidity and tannins, slightly inbalanced. Medium long finish, bit harsh aftertaste.
Overall: Seems a bit overdone, may get better with some years on it but would not bet on it.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 5 for overall = total score of 87.

2004 Schwarz, Weiß, Qualitätswein, Burgenland, Austria: 91

Optic: Light golden yellow, brilliant, fat tears.
Bouquet: Delicate fruity, bit oaky, soft.
Taste: Rather full body, soft yellow fruit, soft acidity, silky tannins, good balance, tad fat. Medium long finish, soft tannins and mellow fruit in the aftertaste.
Overall: Similar quality as 2005, not as fat.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.

1994 Montrose, St. Estephe, Bordeaux, France: 89

Optic: Dark ruby, fat tears.
Bouquet: Phenolic dark fruit, resinous, some brett.
Taste: Medium body, dark red fruit, quite thin in the middle with touch of isovaleric acidity, tannins bit coarse. Medium long finish, rustic dark fruity tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Not great but OK.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89.

1999 La Massa, Georgio Primo, Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy: 92

Optic: Medium ruby with black brown core, fat tears.
Bouquet: Soft velvety dark red fruit, hint of brett.
Taste: Medium full body, soft dark red fruit, soft acidity, velvety tannins, good balance. Medium long finish, nice oaky tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Seems quite mature now.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92.

1991 Fonsalette, Syrah, Cotes du Rhone, Rhone, France: 90

Optic: Dark ruby, fat tears, floating sediment.
Bouquet: Dark dense fruit, strong brett - after decanting and next day still bit of animal touch.
Taste: Plump body, dense dark fruit, good acidity, dense tannins, concentrated taste. Long finish, tannins and dense dark fruit in the aftertaste.
Overall: This bottle had a bit too much brett.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 11 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 90.

Not blind. First not decanted, then decanted and aired for 24 hours. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one.


 

2005 Baillat, Clos de la Miro, Corbières, Languedoc, France: 88

Optic: Dark garnet with violet hue.
Bouquet: Velvety dark red fruit, clearly a young wine.
Taste: Medium body, nice low fruit, good acidity, bit rustic tannins, good grip. Medium long finish, nice aftertaste.
Overall: Cuvée of Syrah, Grenache und Carignan. Delicious with your meal, else simple wine of very good quality.
Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 88.

2003 Lehrner, Dürrau, Blaufränkisch, Horitschon, Burgenland, Austria: 90

Optic: Dark garnet, heavy tartaric sedimend.
Bouquet: Soft dark fruit, soft oak, clean.
Taste: Medium body, soft dark red fruit, soft acidity, soft tannins. Medium long finish, silky smooth aftertaste.
Overall: May be a bit too polished to be exciting.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90.

2003 Fontodi, Flaccianello, IGT Toscana, Tuscany, Italy: 91

Optic: Medium ruby, bright.
Bouquet: Classic Sangiovese nose with crisp dark red fruit and some oak.
Taste: Medium body, dark red fruit, crisp acidity, bit rustic tannins, good balance. Medium long finish, some okay velvety dark red fruit in the aftertaste.
Overall: Tuscany in a glass.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.
